U21 test for Charlton duo

Addicks full-backs Martin Cranie and Grant Basey could come up against one another on Friday night (7.45pm) as England and Wales contest a place at this summer's U21 European Championships.

Cranie, on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the year, is expected to start for Stuart Pearce's England for the first leg of the play-off clash against Wales in Cardiff.

And Basey is in the Wales squad for the fixture at Ninian Park, although he has yet to make his debut for his country at U21 level.

England enter the tie as favourites having beaten Wales 2-0 in a friendly in Wrexham the last time the two sides met, at the end of last season.

Cranie played for England in their last fixture, a qualification win against Portugal at Wembley, while Basey was an unused substitute for Wales.

But Basey's cause has been helped by the fact that fellow U21 full-backs Chris Gunter and Gareth Bale have both been named in John Toshack's senior squad for a World Cup qualifying match against Liechtenstein the following day.

The second leg takes place at Villa Park next Tuesday night.
