Pardew clinches Bougherra deal

Charlton have captured Algerian international Madjid Bougherra, the club confirmed on Sunday evening.

The Addicks have paid Championship club Sheffield Wednesday £2.5m for the 24-year-old centre-half.

Bougherra becomes the third new arrival at The Valley during the January transfer window, following loan recruit Zheng Zhi and £500,000 capture Ben Thatcher into SE7 under Alan Pardew's tenure.

"Madjid is a player who has come into English football and proved that his type of game can adjust," said Addicks boss Alan Pardew.

"He has a real presence and power on the pitch that we hope to harness in our team, not only during the run-in this season but for years to come."

Born in Longvic, France, Bougherra - nicknamed 'Magic' - has more than 10 caps for the Desert Foxes of Algeria and is known for his uncompromising style at the back, as well as his willingness to bring the ball out of defence.

He made his name with FC Gueugnon and then joined Crewe Alexandra on loan at the end of January 2006.

Bougherra made his debut in English football the following month against Brighton & Hove Albion, and scored during his fourth game for Alex in a home win over Coventry City.

However, upon Crewe's relegation from the Championship last May (after 11 games), he joined Wednesday with the Owls parting with around £300,000.

He would go on to make 29 appearances for Wednesday, including three matches alongside on-loan Addicks winger Lloyd Sam earlier this season.

Bougherra found the net twice for the Yorkshire outfit, both in November against Ipswich Town and West Bromwich Albion.
